The Taraba State Government has denied approving the reopening of the disputed Jatutu Cathedral following a lingering ownership conflict between the United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN) and the Global Methodist Church in Nigeria (GMCN).

The government said although they welcomed the recent reconciliation efforts within the UMCN, the Jatutu Cathedral remains a subject of legal dispute between the UMCN and the Global Methodist Church (GMC) and the government will not jeopardize the process.

A government source explained that while the state remains committed to ensuring freedom of worship and peaceful coexistence among citizens, it honors reconciliation initiated under the leadership of former Governor Rev. Jolly Nyame between the two factions of the UMCN adding that the government cannot intervene in matters currently before a court of law.

“The governor is pleased with the reconciliation efforts among members of the United Methodist Church of Nigeria, which had previously generated serious concern in the state,” SGS said.

He added that Governor Dr Agbu Kefas as a lover of peace and tranquility, is willing to attend the reconciliation service scheduled for February 22, 2026, if it is held at any other suitable venue in the state.

The Jatutu Cathedral has remained at the centre of controversy following disagreements between UMCN and GMCN over rightful ownership and control of the worship facility, a situation that has heightened tensions among members of both groups in parts of the state.
