Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the reopening of the United Methodists Church in Nigeria (UMCN) in the state, after the church was shut for more than a decade due to prolonged internal conflict.

The approval was conveyed in an official letter signed by the Secretary, Home Affairs and Special Services, for the Secretary to the Government of Taraba State, Koku Agbu Koku.

According to the letter addressed to the Bishop of the UMCN, Emmanuel Ande, the decision followed sustained peace efforts and reconciliation processes among stakeholders, which have helped to address the issues that led to the closure of the church many years ago.

Governor Kefas, while emphasizing the importance of peace, unity and religious harmony in the state, expressed optimism that the reopening of the church will further strengthen peaceful coexistence and allow worshippers to freely practice their faith without fear or division.

The state government also urged members and leaders of the UMCN to sustain the spirit of reconciliation and avoid actions that could trigger a return to crisis. It further called on parties to the dispute to be present at the service, as His Excellency will personally attend the Church service to demonstrate the Government’s goodwill, support and commitment to sustained peace and unity within the Church on Sunday February 22nd, 2026.

The letter further noted that security agencies and relevant authorities have been directed to monitor the situation and ensure that the reopening process is carried out peacefully and in line with the laws of the state.

The reopening of the UMCN church marks a significant step in the Kefas administration’s commitment to promoting peace, dialogue and stability across Taraba State.
