In a major political development, Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and was formally received to the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman, a move that has stirred widespread reactions across the state and beyond.

The governor made the announcement at a well-attended political gathering held at the Jolly Nyame’s Stadium on Saturday 31st January, 2026, citing the need to align Taraba State with the centre in order to accelerate development, attract federal presence, and deepen inclusive governance. According to him, the decision was taken after wide consultations with political stakeholders, traditional leaders, and supporters across the state and not for personal gain.
Political analysts view the defection as a strategic shift that could reposition Taraba for greater access to federal opportunities. As the ruling party at the national level, the APC controls key levers of power that could translate into increased federal appointments, infrastructure projects, security support, and budgetary interventions for the state.
Observers believe that the move could fast-track long-awaited projects in critical sectors such as road construction, agriculture, education, and healthcare, while also strengthening Taraba’s voice in national policy discussions. The defection is also expected to reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of future elections, with potential realignments among lawmakers and grassroots supporters.
While reactions remain mixed, supporters of the governor have described the decision as bold and forward-looking, arguing that development should rise above party loyalty. They maintain that the ultimate beneficiary of the move will be the people of Taraba State.
As the dust settles, attention now shifts to how the governor’s new political alignment will translate into tangible dividends for citizens, with many hopeful that the defection will usher in a new era of growth, stability, and progress for Taraba State.
Taraba is now APC with His Excellency, Dr Agbu Kefas as the Leader.
