THE MINISTRY OF TERTIARY EDUCATION TAKES OVER FROM THE DEFUNCT MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
The Ministry of Education handed over the affairs of the tertiary institutions to the Ministry of Tertiary Education in the ministry’s headquarters on Thursday 19th December, 2024.
This was due to the creation of the new ministry by His Excellency Dr Agbu Kefas to improve efficiency and service delivery especially at the tertiary levels of education.
The Commissioner Dr Augustina Godwin and the Permanent Secretary of now Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education spearheaded the handing and taking over by the Overseeing Commissioner and Permanent Secretary Prof Nicholas N. Oliver and Dr. Hamidu Ahmed Kara respectively.
In his welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Idris A. Goje lauded the foresight of His Excellency Dr Agbu Kefas in improving efficiency and service in the education sector. He commended the Honourable Commissioner Dr Augustina Godwin’s leadership and unwavering commitment in achieving numerous goals for the overall interests of the state.
He highlighted some of the achievements recorded during her period of supervision which include but not limited to payments of backlogs of TSU staff, accreditation exercises in the university, polytechnic and college of education, students union relations etc.
Presenting the handing over file, the Commissioner, Dr Godwin used the opportunity and thanked His Excellency Dr Agbu Kefas for splitting the ministry into two which will fasten his developmental strides in the education sector.
She mentioned among others the efforts in the pipeline in revamping the tertiary education and assured her readiness to cooperate with new ministry in implementing the good and overwhelming policies of Dr Agbu Kefas.
Dr Godwin expressed optimism in the leadership of the new ministry and prayed to God to guide them in this new assignment.
Responding, the Overseeing Commissioner, Honourable Professor, Nicholas Nemisan Oliver ably and capably represented by the Overseeing Permanent Secretary, Dr. Hamidu Ahmed Kara thanked Dr Augustina for her wonderful contributions and sued for synergy adding that their major role is to set the new ministry pending the appointment of the substantive Commissioner and Permanent Secretary by His Excellency, Dr Agbu Kefas.
He assured their readiness to cooperate with the mother ministry in achieving the free and compulsory education policies of His Excellency.
The Overseeing Permanent Secretary immediately commenced familiarization meeting and other sightseeing after the taking over.
